Organization of the Discipline's Knowledge Base
The knowledge structure of biology is organized around a single “big idea”: the theory of evolution. Students begin by observing the common physical features of plants and animals and their habitats. Learning about single cell organisms leads to a broader discussion of cells, including their anatomy and reproduction. This leads to a genetics and DNA, which provide the background knowledge needed to understand the theory of evolution.
Books and Materials
In grade one, which is the elementary grade that focuses on biology, students will conduct laboratory experiments from Pandia Press, and will use "What's Biology All About?" from Usborne. In grade five, which is the upper grade that focuses on biology, students will use the books and laboratory kits provided by Prentice Hall Science Explorer
Teaching Techniques
Students will be taught using a variety of techniques, including teacher-led instruction, demonstrations, laboratory experiments, and investigations. The best available research that supports using a particular approach for a particular topic will be consulted when determining the techniques to be used.
