Chemistry

Organization of the Discipline's Knowledge Base

The knowledge structure of chemistry is organized around a single “big idea”: the atomic theory. Students begin by observing the properties of objects, the states of matter, and learn the idea of the atom. After learning about electricity and charges, students learn about neutrons, protons, electrons, and quarks. This builds to a more detailed understanding of the atomic theory based on the periodic table of the elements, molecules, types of chemical bonds, and, lastly, the Law of Conservation of Mass and how to balance simple chemical equations.

Books and Materials

In grade three, which is the elementary grade that focuses on chemistry, students will conduct laboratory experiments from Pandia Press, and will use "What's Chemistry All About?" from Usborne. In grade seven, which is the upper grade that focuses on chemistry, students will use the books and laboratory kits provided by Prentice Hall Science Explorer

Teaching Techniques

Students will be taught using a variety of techniques, including teacher-led instruction, demonstrations, laboratory experiments, and investigations. The best available research that supports using a particular approach for a particular topic will be consulted when determining the techniques to be used.
