Organization of the Discipline's Knowledge Base
Handwriting is taught in an “elements first” sequence, beginning with simple strokes and progressing to more complex figures, and complements reading instruction by helping students to identify letters.
Books and Materials
Handwriting instruction is included as a part of Reading Street, our selected reading program. Instruction in handwriting complements reading instruction by helping students to recognize the letters they read.
Teaching Techniques
Students will learn both manuscript and cursive through an “elements first” approach that emphasizes mastery. Students who learn to produce letters with automaticity (in other words, without having to think about it) free their short term memory to focus on higher level writing skills such as tone, plot, and word choice. Writing is a more complicated process than reading, and our handwriting instruction supports writing by ensuring that this fundamental skill does not become a bottleneck that hinders the development of students' ability to express themselves through the written word.
