Guide: How Parents Can Help

A) Stay informed

Read the one-page Funding Graphic and “Hidden Costs” explainer.

B) Speak up; be kind, clear, and specific

Use this short script for emails or phone calls to your State Board members, state legislators, county leaders, and Congressional offices:

Subject: Please protect fair funding for our public charter school

Hello, I’m a parent at Frederick Classical Charter School. I support public education and want my child’s school to stay strong.

The state’s draft funding rule would increase district fees to 5% and charge our school for districtwide SPED “overages,” even though charters already pay for our own buildings and operations. That leaves far less for classrooms—about $9,450 per student vs. $16,500 in district schools, according to our school’s analysis.

Please (1) restore the 2% fee cap, (2) remove SPED overage deductions, and (3) recognize charter-specific costs like facilities so funding is truly commensurate with other public schools.

Thank you for supporting all public school students—including charter students.

C) Share your story

In two sentences: “What our school means to my child,” + “What we stand to lose if funding is cut.” Authentic stories beat spreadsheets.

D) Spread the word

Share this FAQ link and graphic on your social media.
